On May 20, 1875, representatives from 17 countries gathered in Paris, France to sign the “Metre Convention,” an intergovernmental agreement aimed at adopting the International System of Units (SI) worldwide and ensuring consistent measurement results. For over a century, the organization established by this convention has been crucial in maintaining uniform international measurement standards, facilitating global trade, and advancing science and technology. In 1999, the 21st General Conference on Weights and Measures declared May 20th as “World Metrology Day.”World Metrology Day

Historical Background
From October 11 to October 15 in 1999, delegates convened at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) in Paris for the 21st General Conference on Weights and Measures. The aim was to educate governments and citizens about metrology’s significance while encouraging advancements in this field globally. As part of these efforts, May 20th was officially named World Metrology Day with support from the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML).
The historic signing took place on May 20, 1875 when representatives from 17 out of an initial group of 20 countries endorsed what became known as the “Metre Convention.” This agreement laid down guidelines that led to establishing a permanent scientific institution—the BIPM—in France. Often referred to as the cradle of modern metrology, BIPM operates under two governing bodies: The General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) and its scientific arm, known as CIPM (International Committee for Weights and Measures). Their collective mission is to ensure global uniformity in measurement standards.
Since May 20th became recognized as World Metrology Day starting in the year 2000 [3], numerous activities have been organized worldwide to celebrate it. In a significant move during their board meeting in 2001, OIML encouraged national metrological institutions to mark this day with relevant events. Declaring May 20th as World Metrology Day has significantly raised public awareness about metrology’s critical role while amplifying its societal impact.
